Most of the locomotives were decorated in CP Red with the “CP” overpainted with “NBEC”.NBEC 1834, 4219, and 4235 still had the CP multimark.

The SD40s, NBEC 1857, CFQC 3000 and SFEX 4204 were painted in an attractive scheme of black with a horizontal yellow or white stripe and detailing in white.

CFMG 6902, 6903, 6906, 6907, 6908, 6909 and 6910 technically belonged to the CFMG (Chemin de Fer de Matapedia et Golf) but were often seen on NBEC lines. The Quebec Railway Corporation owned both the NBEC and the CFMG, as well as the CBC, OCRR and CFC.
