Ian and Bill Visit the West, Part 4

This is the fourth and last in the series. Start at part 1 here. The intrepid duo were heading back to Saskatchewan (again) and caught some interesting trains along the way.

They were driving on June 5 when they saw the Canadian Pacific heritage unit, CP 6644 (the “D Day” unit) parked by itself in Grenfell, Saskatchewan. It was quite a coincidence to see that a day before “D Day”.

They made their way along the CP Weyburn subdivision and saw a few trains between Pasqua and the US border. In the photo above, a CP stack train (8894/8829) was passing the Richardson facility in Corinne, SK. The locomotive in the background is Richardson #2180, originally an AT&SF GP7 #2799. I think that is the same locomotive that I saw a portion of in early 2019.

CP 7036 was sitting on a grain elevator loop track… I’m not sure of the location of this one.

On the way to Regina, they caught a stack train at Pasqua near where the Weyburn sub joins the main line.

I really like the next photo. Taken from a hotel room in Regina, it shows a lot of interesting detail in the city. On the left, a CN freight train (transfer?) is pulling into the yard. In the distance, we see a pair of CP switchers, a CN unit (GP38?), and a red HLCX locomotive that might be a Stewart Southern unit or a Last Mountain Railway unit.

Ian and Bill made a quick trip down the Stewart Southern Railway and found a pair of CRLX leased GP38-2 locomotives in Stoughton.

On their way to the airport to fly home, they caught this quartet of Canadian Pacific locomotives for the last photos of the trip. Two GP20C-ECO and two GP38-2 locomotives!

VIA 692 approaching Winnipeg, June 2, 2022

Ian posted three videos on YouTube featuring VIA Rail trains from their trip. The one above (VIA 692 returning to Winnipeg from Churchill) features some beautiful sunset light.

This one shows VIA 1 (the westbound Canadian) west of Melville, SK on May 31.

This video shows VIA 2 in Portage la Prairie, MB on June 1.

Thanks!

Thank you, Ian, for sharing your photos and videos! It looks like you and Bill had a great trip.
