The city of Fredericton, New Brunswick used to be served by both CP and CN, but by 1995 there were no trains remaining.

CP Rail in Fredericton

CP had a yard in downtown Fredericton between York and Regent Street. The passenger train station was located on York Street with a CP Express warehouse beside it. After the railway left the CP Express building was used as a recycling depot for many years.

CP used MLW RS-18s for locomotives into Fredericton for some time. By early October 1989 these were replaced by MLW RS-23s.

Trains to Nackawic and Florenceville started in the downtown Fredericton yard, traversed the CN tracks over the Saint John River, then returned to CP rails on the Shogomoc subdivision.

CP ceased serving Fredericton in November 1993.

CN in Fredericton

CN had a yard on the north side of the Saint John River in Devon, beside the lumber yard on the north side of the train bridge. CN served several customers in Fredericton and supplied coal to the heating plant at CFB Gagetown for many years.

Near the end of service CN used MLW M420 units for locomotives in Fredericton.

CN closed the Nashwaak and Oromocto subdivisions in the winter of 1994-1995. They were reopened in April 1995 to send several trains of coal to CFB Gagetown for heating. The last train was April 27, 1995.

There are a few forgotten sections of track left in the city, but in general the trains have vanished and left the ubiquitous walking trails behind.
