TransLink on the Move

You don’t often see subway cars on the highway.

I was caught by surprise when I saw these blue SkyTrain Mark V cars rolling west on the Trans-Canada Highway near Elkhorn, Manitoba on October 26.

Trucks were hauling the cars on flatbed trailers, unwrapped. I’m surprised they weren’t covered at all.

According to TransLink’s site, these cars are made by Alstom in La Pocatière, Quebec, tested in Kingston, Ontario and then shipped by truck, like you see here. There’s a photo of one being built here.

The Mark V cars are made in 5-car sets, and indeed I saw five separate trucks as we sped east toward Winnipeg.

This photo was taken by my wife, as I was driving. This particular car is #6162.
