Mile 16

One of the few bends in the CN Rivers subdivision is 16 miles west from Winnipeg’s downtown Union Station. Recently I spent an enjoyable morning there.

I was there for a very late VIA “Canadian” but there was plenty of CN action around VIA 1.

CN 3322 East

The first eastbound train I saw showed why I like this curve. Sweet morning light on the nose and a curving train. Note the open rack of wheels atop one of the containers.

CN 3896 West

I wasn’t quite so excited about westbound trains, given the low light to the east, so I shot the side of the train. The conductor gave a wave as they rolled past.

Waves are always appreciated!

The “Canadian”

VIA 1 came rolling past, more than 12 hours late. I grabbed a shot with my telephoto lens as it approached.

The photo below is a screen grab from the video. The colours are a little “off”.

The “Canadian” always looks great going away.

I saw another eastbound train approaching, so I waited a few more minutes.

CN 8963 East

A unit tank train trailed behind CN 8963. It was a mix of propane, gasoline, diesel and maybe other similar

It was a good outing!

  1. Nice shot of the VIA Canadian going away. Makes me wonder though what they will put on the end of the train when the Budd cars are finally replaced. They did such a good job removing the caboose on freight trains and replacing it with EOTD ‘s ( hee hee !)
