Mino Bimaadiziwin

I was in Toronto recently. While walking toward the UP Express to get to Pearson, I came across the exhibit “We Are Still Here” by Blake Angeconeb. This is a collection of six paintings on display in the west end of the station just outside the great hall.

From the artist’s statement: ‘In Anishinaabemowin, “Mino Bimaadiziwin” means to live a good life. It is not only a saying, it is a way of conducting oneself.”

The six pieces are vibrant and eye-catching, and feature a variety of themes. I liked “Ojiim”, which is derived from Klimt’s famous “The Kiss” painting. I was fortunate to see the original “Kiss” in Vienna and I love Angeconeb’s interpretation of it.

The exhibit is part of Union Station’s partnership with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, and is supported by TD Bank. It is particularly fitting, then, that the artist created the piece “The Man Who Walks Among The Stars” featuring Gord Downie.
